She called about one product.
We ended up talking about her whole store.
From my desk today
My phone rang on a regular Tuesday. On the line was the owner of a store that belongs to a national hardware buying group.
She'd seen that one of our products will be featured in the group's next national flyer. She wanted to know more, and whether the collection would fit her store.
Her store is in a remote location.
So her first question wasn't about the product. It was about delivery.
What does it take to qualify for free delivery? For her, that one answer decides whether an order makes sense at all.
We went through what would apply to her store. At Randmar, the free delivery threshold depends on the type of client, so it's always worth a quick conversation.
Then the conversation opened up.
The retailer reality
If your store is far from the big cities, freight isn't a line item. It's the whole decision.
Every supplier has its own minimum for free delivery. Miss it, and the shipping charge can eat the margin on the order.
So you end up juggling:
- One supplier for the flyer item
- Another for stationery
- Another for electronics
- Each with its own account, its own minimum, its own truck
That's a lot of purchase orders, a lot of invoices and a lot of freight bills for one store.
And a lot of time you're not spending on the sales floor.
Behind the scenes at Randmar
Randmar clients can use a virtual assistant built right into their account. It helps with business questions, orders and product searches, any time.
And when you'd rather talk to a person, anyone can reach our support team at service@randmar.io or 1-800-565-1221.
Here's what happened after that first call.
The bigger basket.
The flyer product got her on the phone. But Randmar carries far more than one collection.
We distribute about 67 brands. For her store, that meant:
- Stationery and office products
- Electronics
- And much more, from the same account
One supplier. One invoice. One delivery.
That's when her tone changed. A bigger basket from a single source makes it easier to reach the free delivery threshold, and it cuts the number of shipments coming to a remote store.
Less purchasing work. Lower logistics costs.
Meet Loraine.
Once she decided to open an account, I handed her over to Loraine Fraraccio.
Loraine handles client onboarding on the Randmar portal. She walks each new client through their account: where to find products, how to place and track orders, and how to get the most out of the tools.
It sounds simple. It's not.
A new account is only useful if the person using it feels at home in it. Loraine makes sure they do, so the first order is easy and the tenth one is even easier.
Thank you, Loraine. Many of our clients' good first impressions start with you.
My real point
The product that gets you to call a supplier is rarely the most valuable thing they can do for you.
Ask what else they carry. Your freight bill will thank you.
Your quick win this week
List every supplier you ordered from last month and what you paid each one in freight. If three or more ship similar categories, see whether one of them can cover all of it and get you over a free delivery threshold.
Your turn
How many different suppliers does it take to stock your store today, and how many would you keep if you could start over?
Randmar. Your growth is our business.
